The Christian life is not some sort of general idea of spirituality. The Christian life is one where there is real obedience to a real King named Jesus. Western Hemisphere Christianity does not necessarily need more information. What it needs is more faith filled obedience.
Living as an obedient Christian in a hostile society is difficult. The more hostile society the more difficult or costly it may be to obey your King. Peter’s readers were faced with this same kind of challenge. The temptation to minimize one’s faith so that you more comfortably fit into society is a temptation faced by many Christians through the ages including some notable examples such as Abraham, David, and even Peter himself.
Chosen for Obedience
Peter stirs up faith filled obedience in his readers when he links God’s Spirit as the instrumental means of God’s choice and their obedience to Jesus Christ. God’s choice of them had the result of their obedience to Jesus.
Chosen by God for Obedience
Christian, let the fact that God chose you for salvation inspire your faith filled obedience to your King today. Your obedience to Jesus is not simply a duty you must dispense. It is much more than that. Your obedience to Jesus is only possible because of God’s free gracious choice of you for salvation. It is God who makes your obedience possible. He chose you in the Spirit and it is by that same Spirit you are given strength to obey. So then let God work out the salvation he has given you in faith filled obedience to your King.
