PHILOSOPHY OF CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

A Brief Overview:

Grace Kids is our teaching ministry to children age 4 through grade 3. Children always remain with the church family during gathered singing and giving, but Grace Kids provides age-appropriate, biblical instruction to children separately during the Sunday morning sermon.
We offer Grace Kids on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sundays of every month. On the 1st and 5th Sundays of the month, the children remain with the adults for the time of biblical preaching.

Philosophy

Our philosophy of children’s ministry seeks to promote Christian discipleship in our children through both age-appropriate, biblical instruction and exposure to gathered worship and biblical preaching.
We take this approach because we want our children to love worshiping God – in song, prayer, serving, giving, and preaching. Since children learn in part through emulation, we believe one of the best ways for them to learn worship is by seeing their parents love God in these ways.

We also believe that, just as children learn language through immersion, they can also learn about God through immersion in gathered worship and biblical preaching. Children are always present with us during gathered singing and giving, but we also value worshiping God with them through biblical preaching. We believe such preaching grows their awe of God and teaches them to rightly treasure someone greater than themselves. We pray that God will use deliberate exposure to biblical preaching to grow our children’s understanding of him and his gospel.

If you come from a background where children are always taught separately from adults, this may sound strange. However, we believe that children’s ministry in isolation can inadvertently undermine the value of gathered worship and preaching in the minds of both children and their parents. We do not want to teach our children that only parts of gathered worship are beneficial for them, or that it is only beneficial so long as it seems “interesting” to them.

For these reasons we deliberately include our children in gathered worship on the 1st and 5th Sundays of each month. However, we realize that preaching aimed at an adult audience is often beyond a child’s understanding, so we invest in our children through age-appropriate biblical instruction, which we call Grace Kids.  Grace Kids is offered on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sundays of each month.
